Ombersley Memorial Hall was awarded a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grant of £10,000 to mark the Centenary of the First World War 1914-1918. HLF wanted to make a real difference for heritage, people and communities and particularly help young people understand more about the heritage of the First World War and take an active part in the centenary celebrations.
The project focused on the Home Front and what it was like in Ombersley, a rural village, during the war years. What were people doing to support the war effort and keep the local community going? Research into who lived in various houses in the village was carried out by volunteers to produce a Blue Plaque Walk and Blue Plaque Cycle Ride. Various events were held over the 23 month period which included the children from Ombersley Endowed School. The project was so successful that Ombersley Historical Society has since been formed.
